There are 1,537,797 service companies in nine trades across the United States (CityPreferred count, October 2026). New York, NY has the most of any city: 15,140. This page gives what stands out; the tables for every state and city are on the data pages.

What this means if you are hiring one
- In most cities the problem is not finding a company. It is choosing among hundreds. Write down the job before you call anyone, so every company answers the same question.
- Ask for a licence where the trade needs one, proof of insurance, and a reference you can call.
- A count is how many there are, not a list of recommended companies.
How we count
