How rankings work

CityPreferred runs public visibility auctions for local business markets. Every market page has two clearly separated sections, and this page explains both.

The sponsored leaderboard

The leaderboard is paid advertising, and it is always labeled “Sponsored.” Positions are determined by one rule:

  • The highest active bid holds #1.
  • Ties go to whoever activated their bid first.
  • A placement lasts 30 days from activation, then expires and drops off automatically. Everyone below moves up.
  • A bid only activates after its payment is confirmed. Rankings never change on unconfirmed payments.

A leaderboard position does not indicate quality, endorsement, certification, or that a business is better than any other. It means one thing: the business paid for visibility in that market.

The neutral directory

Below every leaderboard is a directory of businesses serving the market. Its ordering is non-commercial and cannot be bought: verified businesses first, then profile completeness, then alphabetical. Bidding has no effect on it.

Verification

The “Verified” badge means our platform confirmed specific criteria — such as control of the business's website domain or phone number, or a manual review. It is independent of bidding and is never granted for payment.

What bidders actually get

A placement buys visibility, not endorsement — and the visibility is real and durable:

  • Top placement on a public, search-indexed market page where customers actually compare providers.
  • A full business profile page with proper structured data, earned placements and verification status — the kind of evidence search engines and AI assistants cite.
  • Permanent daily/weekly/monthly award records with embeddable badges for your own website and marketing.
  • Overtaken alerts and a daily result recap, so you always know where you stand.

We do not sell search-engine ranking signals: outbound links from sponsored placements are marked as sponsored links, as search engines require.

Market data

Stats shown on market pages (top bid, median bid, bid volume, activity counts) are computed from real platform activity. When there is no activity, we show zero — we never fabricate bids, businesses, or statistics.
